Environmental BioAcoustics LLC
Environmental BioAcoustics LLC (EBA) provides expert consulting services in all aspects of animal bioacoustics, with particular focus on ANTHROPOGENIC SOUND. This includes basic studies of hearing, communication, sound production and related topics as they apply to animals.
EBA has particular expertise on the effects of anthropogenic (human-generated sound) on animals!
EBA provides consultation on animal bioacoustics, and particularly anthropogenic sound, to US and international government organizations (including regulatory agencies), companies, law firms, and many other organizations.
Some of the areas in which we have provided expertise:
Effects of pile driving, seismic airguns, explosions, and other impulsive sources on fishes and other aquatic life
Fish passage and the use of sound to control passage
Development of guidelines and criteria for potential effects of anthropogenic sound on fishes and other aquatic life
Effects of wind farm development and operation on aquatic life
Protection of birds at wind turbines
Effects of traffic and other environmental noise on birds
Impact of intense sounds on inner ear structures in birds and fishes
Methodological approaches to evaluating potential effects of anthropogenic sound on birds and fishes
The founders of Environmental BioAcoustics are Dr. Arthur N. Popper and Dr. Robert Dooling, both emeritus professors at the University of Maryland. Popper and Dooling are internationally recognized for their research work on hearing and sound communication and each has published hundreds of scientific papers on the topic.
Popper and Dooling have collaborated for over 30 years on various bioacoustics problems. Together they cofounded the University of Maryland Center for Comparative and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (CCEBH), one of the world’s leading groups studying auditory neuroscience. They both have been very involved in issues of research ethics at Maryland, and co-taught the subject for over 20 years.
Our expertise: Dr. Popper has worked in marine bioacoustics for over 50years. He is emeritus professor of Biology at the University of Maryland, College . Dr. Popper has over 250 publications on hearing and related topics as it relates to fishes, and additional publications that deal with elasmobranchs and marine mammals. He has published over 75 books on hearing. He has consulted internationally and nationally on effects of anthropogenic sounds on marine organisms and fish passage.
Dr. Dooling has investigated hearing and sound communication in birds for almost 50years. He is emeritus professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has over 180 publications in all aspects of avian hearing and sound production and has published several books on hearing and psychoacoustics. He has consulted widely on various aspects of avian hearing and the effects of human-generated sound on birds.
Additional expertise: While the principles of Environmental BioAcoustics are experts in marine and avian bioacoustics, we have access to broad expertise in all aspects of hearing, communication, sound production, human impacts on hearing, and related topics through our broad range of consultants. These individuals bring expertise on bioacoustics of all animal groups from insects to humans, and can provide detailed knowledge and understanding to help solve problems in bioacoustics.
Service: Environmental Bioacoustics LLC can provide general consulting services in all areas animal hearing and the effects of sound on animals. In addition we can provide guidance in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments on a broad range of basic and applied bioacoustics. Environmental BioAcoustics provides expert guidance from scientists who have extensive laboratory research experience and very strong research publication histories.
